Conil and Roche

Overview

Overlooking a splendid golden sand beach, most of the year Conil is quiet fishing town which buzzes with life during the peak summer months. To the south-east one can cross the Río Salado to enjoy the kilometres of virgin sand which makes up Playa de Castilnono - a clothing optional beach which eventually joins up with El Palmar, a good hour's meander along the shore.

The north-west of Conil is home to some of the most desirable restaurants in the area which include El Mirador del Roqueo and La Fontanilla, both of which are a short stroll from all of our properties in Conil. For a more rewarding walk, one can also wander along to the Chringuito Kanguro on the beach of Fuente del Gallo and a short drive away is the El Náutico which fittingly serves some of the freshest fish overlooking the port of Conil.

Roche is home to some of the smartest houses along this unsophisticated coastline, a firm favourite with Madrid high society! Fine dining in El Tímon de Roche or a personal favourite is Mar y Monte, both less than 30minutes stroll from Casa Miguel.

A polular past time for the more active is to hire bikes from Conil Bikes, and enjoy discovering this wilder coast of Andalucía, the cliff side path between the lighthouse over looking the Port of Conil to beginning of Roche is particularly rewarding. One can even enjoy a refreshing dip in the Atlantic one of the half a dozen coves dotted along this route.

And for those looking for history, art and culture – then the majestic city of Cádiz, along with Jerez and Seville, are all waiting to be discovered.

Things to do

Just 15km from Vejer de la Frontera is Conil de la Frontera which along with the neighbouring beaches of El Palmar, LaMangueta, Zahora and Caños de Meca enjoy a loyal clientele of visitors, each has a different attraction and vibe - all are worth visiting. Conil de la Frontera is a hive of activity in the peak summer months with its wide beaches, narrow streets, shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants. A few minutes further are the protected coves of Roche and endless beach running from Barbate to Zahara de los Atunes.

For a special day out visit the Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia, followed by a fresh fish lunch in a  wooden beach bar with views across the straits to Morocco and then a siesta or swim in the crystal clear waters of Bolonia - arguably the best beach on the Costa de la Luz; possibly one of the best in Spain!

Less than 15 minutes drive is sub-tropical Santa Lucia, where avocado, banana trees along with a multitude of flora and fauna enjoy an enviable climate - nourished from the fresh spring water cascading through the village. Nibble some tapas on the terraces of the local bar El Toro or for those with a bigger appetite devour the succulent grilled meats in La Castilleria and combine with a stroll up to the Roman aqueduct or sample the organic produce and local specialities of Isabel's shop. Santa Lucia weaves a magic spell on visitors and most return again and again.

Culture vultures will also enjoy a visit to Cádiz and/or Jerez or even Tangier, adding an exotic taste of Africa to your European holiday! Closer to home is Medina Sidonia, sitting 300m above sea level with views to Arcos de la Frontera, the Natural Parks of Grazalema and Los Alcornocales and the Bay of Cádiz, Rota and El Puerto de Santa María. Soak up these views from the castle ruins and then revive your energies on the terrace of La Vista de Medina - which enjoys panoramic views over this pretty and authentically Spanish town, past rolling hills fringed by the Atlantic.

Golfers will be spoiled for choice as nearby Vejer is home to the manicured course of Montenmedio, and just minutes from the course of Chiclana.

Dining options include those previously mentioned in Santa Lucia, but also include probably the best restaurant in the area Restaurante Patria in Patria, the Italian Il Forno in La Muela and numerous restaurants in Vejer itself, the most famous being the atmospheric El Jardin de Califa or the excellent Restaurante Trafalgar on the pretty Plaza de España.

El Palmar also hosts a number of excellent dining locations including La TorreCasa Juan and the Michelin recognised Casa Francisco.
